Centropolis on Grand

The Centropolis on Grand will be a 56 unit, market rate apartment building to be constructed at the southeast corner of 5th Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market, currently a vacant lot.  The building will be comprised of 52 one bedroom units and 4 two bedroom units.  Each unit will have one parking space on the first level of the structure.

Construction of the 84,000 square foot structure is underway, with leasing to begin in the third quarter of 2015.  The was designed by NSPJ Architects of Prairie Village, KS with exterior elevations that were designed to have a historic feel to fit into the existing landscape of the River Market.

The name Centropolis on Grand is a nod to a historic hotel located at this intersection of the River Market from 1880-1940.  The Centropolis Hotel was named by Major William Gilpin, a mapmaker and early booster of Kansas City.  As far back as 1859, Gilpin referred to Kansas City as “Centropolis” due to its close proximity to the geographical center of the United States.  The hotel was razed in 1941 as development in Kansas City moved southward.  In its peak vibrancy, the Centropolis Hotel was a destination for movie stars and presidents.
